View across the forested hills of Fruška Gora

Places to visit on Fruška Gora

Monasteries in quiet valleys, baroque towns on the Danube, cellars, viewpoints and forest trails.

Fruška Gora is a narrow ridge about 80 km long. Almost everything visitors come for lies in its eastern third, between Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci, Irig and Vrdnik — close enough to combine three or four places in a day.

We have grouped the sights by type. If time is short, prioritise Sremski Karlovci, one great monastery (Krušedol or Novo Hopovo) and sunset at Petrovaradin Fortress.

Monasteries

Krušedol Monastery

The royal mausoleum of Fruška Gora

Founded between 1509 and 1516 by the last Serbian despots of the Branković family, Krušedol is the most important of the Fruška Gora monasteries: a church with layered frescoes behind red outer walls, and the burial place of patriarchs, a princess and a king.

The church of Novo Hopovo Monastery with its colonnaded dome among trees Monasteries

Novo Hopovo Monastery

The finest church architecture on the mountain

Tucked into a wooded valley just off the Novi Sad–Irig road, Novo Hopovo has the grandest church of the Fruška Gora monasteries, built in 1576, with a twelve-sided dome ringed by slender columns and frescoes by painters in the Mount Athos tradition.

Grgeteg Monastery with its baroque bell tower behind a white fence Monasteries

Grgeteg & Velika Remeta

Two neighbouring monasteries in the eastern woods

Grgeteg, said to have been founded by the despot nicknamed Zmaj Ognjeni Vuk, and Velika Remeta, with the tallest bell tower on the mountain, lie a few kilometres apart in quiet valleys near Krušedol — the natural trio for a half-day monastery circuit.

The church of Šišatovac Monastery among trees on its hillside Monasteries

Jazak, Mala Remeta & the Western Monasteries

The quiet side of the “Serbian Holy Mountain”

West of Vrdnik the tour buses thin out. Jazak, Mala Remeta, Bešenovo, Šišatovac, Petkovica, Kuveždin, Divša and Privina Glava are spread along the southern foothills — smaller, calmer monasteries linked by narrow lanes, orchards and vineyards.

Towns & fortresses

The main square of Sremski Karlovci with the Orthodox cathedral and the Four Lions fountain Towns & fortresses

Sremski Karlovci

The baroque wine town where a peace treaty was signed

A small baroque town on the Danube at the foot of Fruška Gora, for two centuries the spiritual and cultural capital of the Serbs in the Habsburg lands. Come for the Patriarchate Court, the Four Lions fountain, the Chapel of Peace — and the cellars pouring bermet.

Petrovaradin Fortress above the Danube seen from the Novi Sad bank Towns & fortresses

Petrovaradin Fortress

The “Gibraltar on the Danube”

A vast Habsburg fortress on a rock where Fruška Gora meets the Danube, facing Novi Sad. Walk the ramparts to the clock tower with its reversed hands, go underground into the countermine tunnels and stay for sunset — or for the EXIT festival in July.

The medieval Vrdnik Tower rising above the forest of Fruška Gora Towns & fortresses

Vrdnik

Spa village, medieval tower and Prince Lazar’s monastery

A former coal-mining village on the southern slope that became the mountain’s spa resort. Warm mineral water, big wellness hotels, the Vrdnik Tower on its forested hill and the Vrdnik-Ravanica monastery make it the easiest place to stay inside Fruška Gora.

Liberty Square in Novi Sad with the portal of the Name of Mary Church Towns & fortresses

Novi Sad

The gateway city on the Danube

Serbia’s second city and the capital of Vojvodina sits on the Danube directly opposite the mountain. Its Habsburg-era centre, café streets, river beach and museums make it the natural base — the forest starts barely twenty minutes from Liberty Square.

Wine & food

Fruška Gora Wine Route

1,700 years of vines, from Probus to bermet

Vines have grown on these slopes since the Roman emperor Probus had them planted in the third century. Today some sixty family wineries around Irig, Sremski Karlovci, Banoštor, Neštin and Erdevik pour Graševina, Grašac, Portugieser and the aromatic dessert wine bermet.

Nature & trails

Iriški Venac & the Ridge

The pass at the heart of the national park

The main road over the mountain tops out at Iriški Venac, about 450 m up. Here are the Freedom Monument, the war-scarred TV tower, the national park’s visitor facilities and the trailheads for the ridge path, picnic meadows and the highest summit, Crveni Čot.

The stone obelisk on the grave of Branko Radičević in the forest at Stražilovo Nature & trails

Stražilovo

The poet’s hill above Sremski Karlovci

A forested hill and picnic ground 4 km above Sremski Karlovci, loved by generations of students and hikers. At the top stands the tomb of Branko Radičević, the Romantic poet who went to school in the town below and asked to be remembered here.

The green-blue water of Ledinci Lake below the rock walls of the old quarry Nature & trails

Ledinci Lake & Popovica

A turquoise quarry lake and the marathon trails

Above the village of Stari Ledinci an abandoned stone quarry filled with water and became the mountain’s most photographed lake. Nearby Popovica is Novi Sad’s favourite trailhead and the start of the annual Fruška Gora Marathon.

Putting it together

With one day, follow the eastern loop: Novi Sad → Petrovaradin → Sremski Karlovci → Krušedol → Novo Hopovo → Iriški Venac → Novi Sad. With two, add Vrdnik and the western monasteries, or a slow day on the wine route. Our travel guide has full itineraries, and the tours page lists guided versions of each.

Plan your day in the hills

Monasteries, wine cellars and a fortress — in one day

Fruška Gora sits between Belgrade and Novi Sad, but its sights are scattered and buses are thin. A guided day trip strings together the monasteries, Sremski Karlovci and a bermet tasting without the logistics.
