Why Fruška Gora

The “Serbian Holy Mountain” — and a very good glass of wine

Fruška Gora is a long, low, forested ridge that rises unexpectedly from the flat plain of Vojvodina, with the Danube curling along its northern foot. It is small enough to cross in half an hour and rich enough to fill a week.

Between the 15th and 18th centuries its hidden valleys became the refuge of Serbian monasticism, earning it the name “Serbian Mount Athos”. The Romans planted its first vines; the Habsburgs built the fortress at Petrovaradin and the baroque streets of Sremski Karlovci. Today you can pair frescoes with a bermet tasting, a ridge hike with a thermal pool, and be back in Belgrade for dinner.
